Volunteer Roles

• Setting up for Limmud
  On the Thursday night before conference, Limmudniks arrive at the Indaba Hotel to transform the space into something truly magical. We need as many people as possible to help with putting up signage, posters and banners, as well as getting the Young Limmud, Common Ground Lounge, and registration spaces ready.

  
  

  We also need a couple of volunteers who can assist with setting up the Eiruv on Thursday afternoon. Must be able to wield a 4-pound hammer. Extra points if you come with your own hammer.
• Packing up after Limmud
  After the magic of Limmud comes to a close late Sunday afternoon, we need to make sure we pack up everything and leave the hotel the way we found it. Care must be taken to pack things up in a way that will make it easier for us to set up for future events. 

  
  

  All volunteers are invited to join us after we have packed up at the hotel bar for a celebratory drink.
• Registration of participants
  Registration takes place twice during Limmud: Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. We will need assistance in welcoming people on arrival, checking them in, and handing out name tags and goodie bags. On Sunday, we also have walk-in participants who will need to be registered. This is a high-energy and people-facing role, as registration is the first point of contact for everyone attending Limmud.
• Manning the help desk

  Throughout conference, our help desk is available to assist with any queries. These tend to be questions about room locations, programming, or lost and found items. On Sunday afternoon, our help desk will also manage any late check-ins. 

  Ideally, we prefer to have two volunteers allocated to each time slot. The times have been designed in a way that there is minimal impact to volunteers attending sessions before and after their slots.

• Room monitor

  As a room monitor, you will be allocated to a particular lecture room for the morning/afternoon. This does not mean you need to attend the sessions in that room. You will just need to pop in at the start of the break time between sessions to check that the presenter has everything they need (for example, their handouts from the help desk or support from the AV team). You may also need to assist them with changing the room’s setup if required. 

• Shabbat support
  There are several Shabbat-related activities that we need support with:

  * Set up for candle lighting on Friday afternoon

  * Collect the benchers after meals (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch) and put them away in the storeroom for safekeeping

  * Set up for the Friday night Tisch

  * Hand out a few things (e.g., spices) for Havdallah
• Young Limmud support
  Young Limmud always appreciates any extra help participants are able to provide. This is typically joining for specific activities that you help the team run.
• Saturday night fundraising
  Following Saturday’s dinner, we will have several speeches and a fundraising appeal in Kgotla Hall. We need support from all volunteers to hand out pledge cards at all the tables and then collect them once filled out.
